Although the history of Hawaii’s fashion is nearly 200 years long, it is believed that Hawaii’s “Traditional” dress, the HOLOKU’ first acquired it’s name in the mid 1800’s. With the arrival of the foot pedal sewing machine…. It is very likely the terms “HOLO” meaning to run or move and “KU” meaning to stop, was expressed with the start and stop of this foot pedal sewing machine.
With the influence of fashions arriving from around the world, over time, this fashion term needed to adapt to new trends! Prior to the turn of the 20th century the Holoku was a garment worn by the women of Hawaii of a loose fit with or without and long train. However,In the early to mid 1900’s the term "Holoku’" became mostly associated with fitted gowns and long trains.
As trains started to become shorter there was a need to describe a full cut gown without a train. The meaning of Muu Muu is “cut off” or “shortened” and by the mid 1900’s the full cut gown without a train became simply known as the Muu muu. This then created a need to identify the fitted gowns without trains. The term Holomuu became a common reference for this type of dress sometime in the 1960’s.)
